Magic with Light Field

From pinhole to 35 mm to polaroid to digital to ....

light field camera

What on earth is light field? New technology driving the future of cameras. Lytro is the company behind this promising innovation-- the camera that turns light into living pictures.

Usually, when you are about to photograph, first instinct is to check the lighting, adjust, focus, and snap the shot. Well, forget it! Yeap, with the Lytro camera you will shoot first and then focus. Crazy, right? I thought so too!

Scientifically speaking, light field defines how an image appears (aka the light rays in a scene). Conventional cameras cannot capture the light field. Why? Because they lack a special light field sensor. This sensor captures color, intensity and vector direction of the rays of light.

The pictures differ from those of digital cameras by allowing photographers to:
  1. Focus pictures after they are snapped
  2. Shift the perspective of the scene
  3. Switch between 2D and 3D views
¨With these amazing capabilities, pictures become immersive, interactive visual stories that were never before possible--- they become living pictures.¨ via Lytro website

Although the product has not yet been introduced into the market (expected release for later this year), it is already creating quite the excitement.

Curious to see how this technology will be adapted and the future will bring to this hobby! :) let´s hope the price tag is not steep!
