It's lovely and breathtaking in person, a must see!

Colorful Night

A friend took me to the Village in Sanlitun in Beijing at night so that I could see one of the most popular shopping centers. The area is quite popular with foreigners, encountered many Germans and English that night. The center also boasts of many many places to eat. Too many restaurants looked appealing, which made it difficult for our tummies to commit to just one dining option. Eventually we decided on The Orient Kitchen. Unfortunately, I don't have any visuals :( but I can tell you that we ate an Asian cross-cultural Hong Kong style meal. Tasty Tasty! The dinning environment is friendly and decor wonderful. Definitely recommend!

p.s. the apple store shown in the pics is the one people pelted with eggs. The act made headlines as the iphone 4S went on sale and people were upset because the store would not open.

Controversial Lips

Spicing up the men's room in the Rolling Stone's Museum with the iconic band's logo (red lips), has turned to be quite a controversy in Luechow, Germany. Some women find the urinals extremely offensive. Others remark and remind the women that the logo is modeled after Mick Jagger's own lips. The designer of the piece is a Dutch woman named Meike van Schijndel.

I think these are colorful! It's a neat way to implement a logo design, resulting in a redesign of an every day item. Logo design functionality!

Parking in Style

Howdy! I've been with a cold and away from the computer again :( but I've returned! Need to feel better as this month will be busy busy ... Hope you had a good week and now enjoying the weeeeeeekend.

So what I really wanted to talk to you about today: GARAGE. Concrete/Gray/Dirty/Gloomy. Well,  that used to be my take on them. Minor exception in Seoul, where I was amazed at the cleanliness of the floors in the parking lots! Soooo shiny, I had to hold on so I wouldn't slip with my heels...

Craig and Karl defy the bland take on the use of space for garages and literally spice it up! They see parking lots as another opportunity to bring color and perspective. What do you think?

Madrid Fusion (Cold Side Effects)

*Sneeze* Cough* Sniff* Sniff*

Tissue anyone? This has been my situation for the past 5 days, not really pleasant as you may understand.
My ears are hurting, eyes tearing up, and no way to identify any taste which makes this post rather appropriate haha! Being sick equates with thinking about food... Food for thought.

We talking Madrid Fusion, a major Spanish food conference, being held between January  24 and 26. This year's conference is special since it marks its 10th year annivesary! It will come loaded with talented chefs, new trends, techniques, management, and FUSION in the kitchen baby.

kids + white canvas

If you think back to when you were a child, do you remember the feeling of seeing white or something ¨blank¨? More specifically,  do you recall having the innate yearning to color and nicely take over the WHITE walls of your house with a crayon or marker? What about the incredible sensation of your art teacher handing you a WHITE ¨blank¨ sheet of paper. The notion of white/blank gives segway into freedom. It means you can release and express to your hearts content all you want within that space. All of this is synonymous with the opportunity to create. It's ironic to consider that with age and as we get older, people have a tendency to be afraid of a ¨blank¨ sheet of paper or canvas. Too much freedom? What deters us, as adults, to embrace the opportunity to create?

The Obliteration Room by Yayoi Kusama functions as a white canvas waiting to be invigorated by its visitors. The interactive project begins invites visitors to contribute to the decor with little colored dot stickers.

¨As with many of Kusama's installations, the work is disarmingly simple in its elemental composition, however, it brilliantly exploits the framework of its presentation. The white room is gradually obliterated over the course of the exhibition, the space changing measurably with the passage of time as the dots accumulate as a result of thousands and thousands of collaborators.¨

Estres ... Stress... Estres

Conoces Estres? Do you know stress?  Not the feeling but the studio? It's composed of Jose Gómez, Hector Muñoz y Jose Ramón Tarazona. This group of guys believe in the philosophy of continuous learning while enjoying the process. They work different disciplines such as product design, graphic design, photography, and video projects. Elegance. Clean. Balance.

The team developed a unique product called MUS. It's an ornament with an intention to express a statement and create an awareness around the ¨bat¨. The bat is a creature struggling to coexist in an environment dominated & destroyed by man.

Statement on the project by the artists:

Mus recreates an upside down jail and represents the bats' lost homes.

RoadKILL Couture

All life begins. Miraculously, living things have a moment in which they become ¨alive¨. That beginning of life marks the first indication on the circle of life.  After that point, there is a journey that eventually transcends to ¨death¨. This concept was made tangible at a particular point in my life. And then of course I also recall being a toddler watching the Lion King, sobbing to my mother as I cried for Mufasa's (Simba's father) death.

The truth is that death is part of life, but the topic of ¨death¨can a sensitive one for individuals. So for me it was intriguing to discover Jess Eaton's project entitled Road Kill Couture. The juxtaposition of roadkill and fashion can be strange and even a bit gruesome at first thought, but let's explore the idea!

Jess Eaton has created a couture collection of garments made out of pelts and feathers of animals that have died of natural causes (victims of roadkill). No animal was harmed or killed for the collection and all materials used would normally be burned, rot away, or discarded as waste.  Eaton says, ¨The collection will hopefully give people food for thought on lots of different levels and give a further life to beautiful things we usually discard.¨

In an industry stereotyped for its insensitivity and environmental impact, this approach to fashion is re-defining what sustainability can actually mean...

Book Sculpture

Books can adorn a table, a bookshelf, a wall, and even ourselves. 

Yes, they act like accessories when we carry them in our arms. 

Today, Guy Laramee asks that we take a look a books as sculptures. The artist's most recent project titled the ¨Chinese Wall¨ showcases carved scenes out of stacks of books creating marvelous mountains, temples, and oceans. His artist statement is worth a read.

Truly innovative and creative use of books as a medium for sculpture and art.
